Stanley Discovery Museum

Opening Hours: Museum is open by volunteers from September until May, Monday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm. Will open by appointment outside these times by prior arrangement.  Entry to the Museum includes a visit to the adjacent St Paul’s Church with three beautiful stained glass windows. Entry: $5 Adults, 50c Children

Stanley Discovery Museum

The recently refurbished Stanley Discovery Museum has been run by volunteers for 50 years.

  • Learn about the history of the settlement and development of the town with a vast photographic collection dating from the first known photos taken in 1858.
  • Maritime history, photographs and relics.
  • Memorabilia and collections of local historical items.
  • Local family histories.
  • Local history journals and publications for sale. “Along the Terrace” – information on residents of Stanley from 1843 to 1922 and where they lived. Also a History of Education in
  • Stanley spanning 160 years – “In the Shadow of the Nut”, both researched by Betty Jones and only available at the Museum.
  • Maritime DVD’s by Garry Kerr including “Trading out of Stanley”
  • Learn about significant events like the first flight across Bass Strait and the first telegraphic cable from the mainland to Stanley.
